Washington, Kentucky 40047 Re: Complaint Number X Dear Ms. Maddox: This is in reference to your complaint against Hardinsburg County, Kentucky, alleging violations of title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). Title II prohibits discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities on the basis of disability by State and local governments. Specifically, you alleged that the courtroom on the third floor of the Hardinsburg County Courthouse is inaccessible to persons with mobility impairments. In my conversation with you on July 8, 1996, you stated that it is your understanding that the Hardinsburg County Courthouse his been renovated since you filed the complaint with us. I spoke to the County Clerk, who indicated that an elevator was installed in the Hardinsburg County Courthouse and provides mobility impaired individuals access from the entrance to the Circuit Court, which is located on the third floor. The County Clerk also stated that the doors to the restrooms have been widen to accommodate wheelchairs and that a small ramp was installed from the walk way to the building. Based on the foregoing information we are closing our files in this matter, as of the date of this letter. The Department of Justice will take no further action in this matter. If you are dissatisfied with our determination, you may be able to file a private complaint in the appropriate United States District Court under Title II of the ADA.
