U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division Disability Rights Section P.O. Box 66738 Washington, DC 20035-6738 July 16, 1996 XX Re: Complaint Number Dear XX This letter is in reference to your complaint alleging that the Charter Township of Canton, Michigan, does not provide written information in accessible formats in violation of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). We have received information from Canton Township indicating that they have in the past provided written information in accessible formats upon request. The Township has, furthermore, drafted a policy "to provide upon request all written materials including Property Assessments, Tax Statements, Voter Registrations, Water Billings, etc. in accessible format. Accessible format would include large printed materials, audio tapes, braille, and computer disk." Based on the foregoing information, we have concluded that your allegations against Canton Township have been resolved. However, if you are dissatisfied with our determination, you may be entitled to file a private complaint in the United States District Court under Title II of the ADA. This letter does not address other potential claims of discrimination on the basis of disability that may arise from the activities of Canton Township. Rather, this letter is limited to the allegations presented in your complaint. Sincerely, Naomi Milton Attorney Disability Rights Section CC: David Medley Personnel Manager Department of Administrative services Canton Community 01-00442
