In order to become a DEA Special Agent, you must pass all phases of the rigorous hiring process. This will include successfully completing a written and oral assessment, urinalysis drug screening, medical examination, Physical Task Test, polygraph examination, psychological assessment, comprehensive background investigation and final hiring decision.
The Most Competitive Special Agent candidates:
- Are 21 years old, and no older than 36 years at the time of appointment
AND
- Have a bachelor's degree, with a GPA of 2.95 or higher
- Special consideration will be given to candidates with degrees in Criminal Justice/Police Science or related disciplines; Finance, Accounting or Economics; Computer Science/Information Systems; Telecommunications/Electrical/Mechanical Engineering; Political Science, Psychology; Sociology; Chemistry; and a Foreign Language (Spanish, French, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, Dialects of Nigerian, Chinese/Mandarin, or Japanese).
OR
- Possess specialized professional experience conducting independent narcotics investigations of alleged or suspected violations of the law; conducting surveillance and undercover activities or operations, and apprehending, arresting persons suspected of violations; and organizing evidence for presentation to prosecution officials and testifying in court
OR
- Three years or more substantive work experience and Special Skills such as Pilot/Maritime, Accounting/Auditing, Military, Technical/Mechanical (includes Information Systems, Telecommunications, Engineering), or Foreign Language fluency in one of the above mentioned languages (fluency subject to verification) and a Bachelors degree or higher (no minimum GPA is required) with coursework related to the aforementioned Special Skill(s).
OR
- LL.B. or J.D. degree with prosecutorial experience.
AND
- Ability to communicate in writing (evidence of this must be demonstrated through experience).
- Ability to analyze facts and reach conclusions (evidence of this must be demonstrated through experience).

- Applicants selected for employment should plan to report to Basic Agent Training class in the best possible physical condition, prepared for a daily regimen of physical activities and testing. Daily activities may include a variety of activities in Strength, Flexibility, Agility, Cardiovascular and Defensive Tactics Training. A rigorous 84-hour physical fitness and defensive tactics regimen is designed to prepare new Special Agents to prevail in compliant and non-compliant arrest scenarios.
- Sharp hearing acuity (hearing aids are disqualifying)
- Distance Vision: 20/20 or better in one eye, 20/40 or better in the weaker eye. If you need glasses or contact lenses to meet these standards, then you should also have distance vision of 20/200 or better in each eye without glasses or contact lenses.
- Near Vision: 20/30 or better (can be with corrective lenses).
- Normal color vision
- Ability to carry 45 pounds or more, capable of heavy lifting
- Are U.S. citizens
- Have a valid U.S. driver's license
- Are willing to relocate anywhere in the U.S.
- Are able to obtain and retain a Top Secret security clearance
