Red Ribbon Week Features
Texas Drug Prevention Group StraightWay

Red Ribbon Week FlyerThe Texas Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition will host its 8th Annual Red Ribbon Week activities from October 21st to October 25th at locations throughout Dallas County. StraightWay, a well-known team of young adults and teens who educate and entertain about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, violence, suicide and other choices, will perform several times during the week.

The Coalition will host several hundred elementary school children on Wednesday, October 23rd at North Lake College for a Red Ribbon Rally - a morning of drug and alcohol awareness education and entertainment. Starting at 9:30 a.m., children will be entertained by StraightWay, cheerleaders, clowns, popcorn, snow cones, a DEA helicopter, policemen, North Lake College Student Organizations, a drug-sniffing dog, the MADD Crash Car and much more. North Lake College President Dr. Herlinda Coronado will open the Red Ribbon Rally, and will be followed by Dallas DEA Demand Reduction Coordinator Special Agent Michelle Deaver.

The Red Ribbon Campaign was started in honor of the late Kiki Camarena, a DEA Agent who was killed in the line of duty by Mexican Drug Dealers. His memory and his beliefs live on with every Red Ribbon Campaign.

The Texas Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition is comprised of more than 35 federal and local government entities, treatment facilities and education and youth-oriented agencies. The Coalition's nine-year history of collaboration provides the community with important annual events including the Red Ribbon Rally and several conferences.
