Detroit City Council Hosts Drug Enforcement Forum

Detroit City CouncilOn November 13th, 2002, the Detroit City Council hosted a special forum in which leaders from various law enforcement agencies were invited to participate in a discussion on drug enforcement activities in the City of Detroit. Participants in the discussion included: DEA Detroit Special Agent in Charge Michael Braun, United States Attorney Jeffrey Collins, Wayne County Prosecutor Michael Duggan, FBI ASAC Larry Kuhl, and Detroit Police Inspector Richard McCarty. Additionally, students of Detroit's Vandenberg Elementary School were in attendance and observed the discussion.

SAC Braun took the opportunity to discuss the strong relationship that DEA has shared with the Detroit Police Department throughout the years, and the important role that Detroit Police Task Force Agents play in DEA's continued success. SAC Braun also discussed DEA's Demand Reduction Program, and the many ongoing activities currently in place in the City of Detroit. SAC Braun emphasized that in order for Detroit to have the greatest success in fighting drug abuse and the high levels of crime associated with drug abuse, law enforcement needs to complement strong drug prevention and drug treatment programs.

Many issues and ideas were raised during this forum and members of the Detroit City Council plan to schedule a future forum in which these law enforcement leaders will have the opportunity to have more in depth discussions to help shape drug related policies within the City of Detroit.
