Alamo Elementary School Recognizes Significance of the Red Ribbon

On October 29, 2002 at 8:30 a.m. Principal Lionel Rubio of Alamo Elementary School will recognize the National Red Ribbon Campaign that was sparked by the murder of DEA Special Agent Enrique ("Kiki") Camarena by drug traffickers. Within weeks of Camarena's death in March 1985, his Congressman Duncan Hunter, and high school friend Henry Lozano, launched "Camarena Clubs." Hundreds of club members pledged to lead drug-free lives to honor the sacrifices made by Kiki and others on behalf of all Americans.

Today the Red Ribbon Campaign symbolizes support for the DEA's efforts to reduce demand for drugs through prevention and education programs. It also represents the ultimate sacrifice one man made in believing he could make a difference.

The students and facility of Alamo Elementary School invite the media to attend this important ceremony that will feature drug free presentations from Teens in Prevention (TiP) leaders representing Paso Del Norte High School, and the Chairman for the Greater El Paso Red Ribbon Campaign, Mr. Carl Robinson.

Paso Del Norte High School has been participating in DEA's TiP NETWORK for over three years, and hundreds of youth participants have provided school-aged children with a drug-free message under the leadership and guidance of Mr. Jorge Uribara, counselor, Paso Del Norte.

Mr. Carl Robinson has been the actively involved in promoting drug-free activities for numerous years and serves on the board of directories of various non-profit organizations.
