Waterbury Man Involved in Crack Distribution Ring is Sentenced

JAN 25 -- June W. Stansbury, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration in New England and Kevin J. O’Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that GERMAN AYALA, 32, of Waterbury, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Mark R. Kravitz in United States District Court in New Haven to 12 months and one day of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for conspiring to possess with the intent to distribute, and to distribute, five grams or more of cocaine base (“crack cocaine”). AYALA pleaded guilty to the charge on May 25, 2007.

On October 4, 2006, a federal grand jury returned an Indictment charging AYALA and several other individuals with various narcotics offenses involving the distribution of cocaine, crack cocaine and heroin in central Connecticut. During the course of the 10-month investigation that began in late 2005 and led to the Indictment, AYALA was intercepted over a court-authorized wiretap on two occasions where he agreed to make deliveries of “eight-ball” quantities of crack cocaine at the behest of a third party. An eight-ball is common slang for approximately an eighth of an ounce, approximately 3.5 grams, of crack cocaine.

This investigation was a collaborative effort of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Waterbury Police Department and the Meriden Police Department.
