New Haven Man Faces Crack Distribution Charges

JUNE 22--June W. Stansbury, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration and Kevin J. O’Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that a federal grand jury sitting in New Haven returned a three-count Indictment today charging STEVEN McCOY, age 36, of 174 Harper Avenue, New Haven, with one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than 50 grams of cocaine base (“crack cocaine”), one count of possession with the intent to distribute more than five grams of cocaine base and one count of possession with the intent to distribute more than 50 grams of cocaine base.

 If convicted of the offenses involving more than 50 grams of crack cocaine, McCOY faces a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of 10 years, a maximum term of life and a fine of up to $4,000,000, on each count.  If convicted of the offense involving more than five grams of crack cocaine, McCOY faces a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of five years, a maximum term of 40 years and a fine of up to $2,000,000.

U.S. Attorney O’Connor stressed that an indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt.  The defendant is entitled to a fair trial at which it is the Government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

U.S. Attorney O’Connor commended the joint investigative efforts of the Safe Streets Task Force, which includes the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Ansonia, Hamden, Milford and New Haven Police Departments, and the State of Connecticut Department of Correction.
