Last Family Member of Illegal Drug
Organization Sentenced in Federal Court

NOV 28 -- (Minneapolis) – The final member of a family drug trafficking ring operating in the Duluth, Minnesota area was sentenced November 22, 2006 in U.S. District Court. Darrell Lamar Fredrickson of Duluth, appeared before United States District Court Judge David S. Doty, who sentenced Fredrickson to eighty months in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute and to possess with the intent to distribute methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana. Frederickson pled guilty to the crime in April of 2006.

The case was the result of a joint investigation by the Duluth Police Department and the U. S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Fredrickson’s cousin, Bret Dietzmann, was sentenced in August 2006 to 108 months in prison for his part in the drug trafficking ring. His uncle, Terry Dietzmann, was sentenced in August 2006 to 70 months in prison

“It’s a sad day when multiple family members get lost in the greed of drug trafficking,” stated Gary G. Olenkiewicz, the Special Agent in Charge of the DEA’s Chicago Field Division, which includes Minnesota. “The DEA is committed to our partnership with the Duluth Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office to combat the distribution of illegal narcotics. We applaud the Court’s sentencing of these defendants.”

According to court documents, the drug conspiracy began in the mid-1990’s and continued to December of 2005, when a federal grand jury indicated Fredrickson and the Dietzmanns on a number of drug charges. During the conspiracy, Bret Dietzmann regularly mailed methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana from California to Fredrickson and Terry Dietzmann, who then distributed the drugs to various customers in the Duluth area.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Thomas M. Hollenhorst.
