Release [print-friendly version] NYFD Celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month
For the past fifteen years, the NYFD has been celebrating and recognizing the many contributions of Hispanic Americans. On October 26, 2006, the NYFD accredited those who were in the audience and reflected on those in our past, like Cesar Chavez, Luis Walter Alvarez, Desi Arnaz,Carlos Finlay, Luis Munoz Rivera and Ellen Ochoa. The event began with speeches from United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Michael Garcia, Assemblyman Peter Rivera and Celinas Toribio. Assemblyman Peter Rivera was a Special Agent with the BNDD thirty four years ago and is now one of the highest-ranking Latino elected official in the New York State Assembly. Subsequent to the presentations the NYFD watched Ms. Rhina Valentin and Mr. Anthony Rodriguez y La Santa Luz sing and dance to latin music. The fun began when one of the dancers took SAC Gilbride to the stage to dance with her. Ms. Rhina Valentin and Mr. Anthony Rodriguez y La Santa Luz were very thoughtful and created dances and songs that honored Hispanic heritage. Not only was there music and dancing, NYFD employees and guests could watch employees of La Casa Grande Cigars rolling cigars which were handed out to those who wanted to bring them home. Latin food was served by the Hispanic Heritage Committee at the end of the celebration, where NYFD employees gathered. It was a good time had by all. “Throughout our history, Hispanic Americans have shown devotion to our country in their military service. They have enriched the American experience and excelled in business, law, politics, education, community service, the arts, science and many other fields. During National Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize the many contributions of Hispanic Americans to our country and we applaud the accomplishments of Hispanic Americans. Thank you for all you do,” stated SAC Gilbride. |
