DEA’s New York Division To Promote Meth Awareness
Events are planned across the country on November 30th

The Drug Enforcement Administration’s New York Field Division will join several federal, state and local agencies to promote National Methamphetamine Awareness Day on November 30, 2006.

The purpose of National Methamphetamine Awareness Day is to generate awareness about the damaging effects of meth abuse on individuals, families and American communities. Education and public outreach play a major role in increasing awareness about meth while also decreasing the demand of this highly addictive and dangerous drug.

“The danger of meth, is not just to the user. There are multiple second hand meth effects that we need to inform our communities about. These range from dangers to the environment, to the community, to our children’s health and safety,” stated Special Agent in Charge John P. Gilbride. “This is a highly addictive drug and it is our duty to ensure that the residents of New York understand the full impact of the dangers associated with it.”

The following specific events are planned in the New York Field Division for National Methamphetamine Awareness Day on November 30th. Media interested in covering any of these events should contact Erin Mulvey at (212) 337-2906.

Event: "Methamphetamine and Clandestine Drug Laboratory Awareness" Training
Time: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Location: DEA, 99 Tenth Avenue, NY, NY 10011

The training is open to local, state and federal law enforcement as well as the press. This training will include the following topics:
• Methamphetamine: Abuse, Effects and Trends
• Clan Labs: Recognition, Dangers, Production methods and Response Protocols
• Investigation and Prosecution of clan lab cases
• Overview of State and Federal Laws
• Drug Endangered Children

Additionally, the New York Field Division will also be distributing Methamphetamine awareness brochures out to schools throughout the state. Special Agents will be available to field questions about the dangers of methamphetamine.
