CHIEF IMMIGRATION JUDGE SWEARS IN NEW

DENVER, CO -- Chief Immigration Judge Michael J. Creppy will give the oath of office today to a new Immigration Judge at an investiture ceremony at 2 p.m. in the Ceremonial Courtroom, U.S. Court of Appeals, 1823 Stout Street in Denver, Colorado. Judge David J. Cordova joins the cadre of 178 United States Immigration Court Judges located in 34 Immigration Courts throughout the nation. U.S. Immigration Judges are responsible for conducting formal administrative proceedings, and act independently in their decision-making capacity. In FY 95, over 200,000 immigration matters were handled, which included exclusion, deportation, bond and rescission cases.

Judge Cordova received his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Denver School of Law in 1973, and is a member of the state of Colorado Bar. Judge Cordova has had extensive advocacy, immigration and litigation experience throughout his professional career. From 1982 to 1995, and again from 1978 to 1980, Judge Cordova ran the Colorado State Public Defender's Office in Brighton, Colorado. From 1980 to 1982, he served as an Enforcement Attorney with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Denver. From 1973 to 1978, Judge Cordova served as head of the Family Law Center, Metro Denver Legal Aid Office. He was also Visiting Professor at both the University of Colorado, and the University of Denver Schools of Law where he taught Immigration Law and Procedure. He has served in numerous civic capacities -- as a member of the Colorado Supreme Court Grievance Committee, as Vice Chair of the Adams County Community Corrections Board, as a member of the Governor's Task Force on Rocky Flats, and as a Board Member of the Hispanic Bar Association. He is also an active member of the American and Hispanic Bar Associations.
