CHIEF IMMIGRATION JUDGE CREPPY SWEARS IN NEW
IMMIGRATION JUDGES IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
FALLS CHURCH, VA -- Chief Immigration Judge Michael J. Creppy will give the oath of
office today to two new Immigration Judges at an investiture ceremony at 4 p.m. in the
Ceremonial Courtroom, United States Courthouse, 333 Constitution Avenue, Sixth Floor,
Washington, D.C. Assistant Chief Immigration Judge Gail B. Padgett, and Immigration Judge
Harriet B. Marple, join the cadre of 178 United States Immigration Court Judges located in 34
Immigration Courts throughout the nation. U.S. Immigration Judges are responsible for
conducting formal administrative proceedings, and act independently in their decision-making
capacity. In FY 95, over 200,000 immigration matters were handled, which included exclusion,
deportation, bond and rescission cases.
Judge Padgett was appointed Assistant Chief Immigration Judge in May 1996. In 1971, she
completed her undergraduate work at Georgia State University, and in 1981, received the degree
of Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center. Before joining EOIR, Judge Padgett
served in several capacities within the Department's Community Relations Service -- from 1989
to 1996, as Associate Director; from 1981 to 1989, as General Counsel; and from 1977 to 1981,
as Special Assistant to the Director. Judge Padgett has received several awards including the
Attorney General's Distinguished Service Award. She is a member of the Virginia, Georgia and
District of Columbia Bars. Judge Padgett is assigned to the OCIJ Headquarters office.
Judge Marple was appointed Immigration Judge in October 1995. She received her B.A.
degree
in 1962 from Radcliffe College and her J.D. from Harvard University in 1966. Before her
appointment as an Immigration Judge, she worked extensively in the immigration arena where
she served as Assistant Commissioner for Adjudications and Naturalization with the Immigration
and Naturalization Service from 1982 to 1987. In addition, she worked as a Staff Attorney with
the Board of Immigration Appeals from 1987 to 1995. Judge Marple is a member of the New
York and District of Columbia Bars and is assigned to the Hartford, CT Immigration Court.
