FALLS CHURCH, VA -- Chief Immigration Judge Michael J. Creppy will give the oath of office today to two new Immigration Judges at an investiture ceremony at 4 p.m. in the Ceremonial Courtroom, United States Courthouse, 333 Constitution Avenue, Sixth Floor, Washington, D.C. Assistant Chief Immigration Judge Gail B. Padgett, and Immigration Judge Harriet B. Marple, join the cadre of 178 United States Immigration Court Judges located in 34 Immigration Courts throughout the nation. U.S. Immigration Judges are responsible for conducting formal administrative proceedings, and act independently in their decision-making capacity. In FY 95, over 200,000 immigration matters were handled, which included exclusion, deportation, bond and rescission cases.

Judge Padgett was appointed Assistant Chief Immigration Judge in May 1996. In 1971, she completed her undergraduate work at Georgia State University, and in 1981, received the degree of Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center. Before joining EOIR, Judge Padgett served in several capacities within the Department's Community Relations Service -- from 1989 to 1996, as Associate Director; from 1981 to 1989, as General Counsel; and from 1977 to 1981, as Special Assistant to the Director. Judge Padgett has received several awards including the Attorney General's Distinguished Service Award. She is a member of the Virginia, Georgia and District of Columbia Bars. Judge Padgett is assigned to the OCIJ Headquarters office.

Judge Marple was appointed Immigration Judge in October 1995. She received her B.A. degree in 1962 from Radcliffe College and her J.D. from Harvard University in 1966. Before her appointment as an Immigration Judge, she worked extensively in the immigration arena where she served as Assistant Commissioner for Adjudications and Naturalization with the Immigration and Naturalization Service from 1982 to 1987. In addition, she worked as a Staff Attorney with the Board of Immigration Appeals from 1987 to 1995. Judge Marple is a member of the New York and District of Columbia Bars and is assigned to the Hartford, CT Immigration Court.
