Christopher C. Alvarez

Christopher C. Alvarez was appointed as the Department of Justice’s Deputy Assistant Attorney General / Controller and Deputy Chief Financial Officer by Attorney General Merrick Garland on February 5, 2024. Mr. Alvarez oversees the Budget Staff, Finance Staff, Asset Forfeiture Management Staff, Debt Collection Management Staff, Strategic Planning and Performance Staff, and the Appropriations Liaison Office.

Mr. Alvarez began his career with the Department of Justice in 1992 as an accountant with the Bureau of Prisons, Trust Fund Branch, preparing the Trust Fund Audited Financial Statements.  In 1995, Mr. Alvarez transitioned to the Justice Management Division, Finance Staff, Financial Statements Group where he served in various positions including Senior Systems Accountant, Deputy Assistant Director, and Assistant Director, both overseeing and preparing the annual Department audited financial statements. In March 2007, Mr. Alvarez was selected as the Deputy Director of the Finance Staff and entered the Senior Executive Service. Most recently, Mr. Alvarez served as the Director of the Finance Staff, providing executive oversight over financial management, financial systems, accounting, audit, and policies, for the last 8 years.

Mr. Alvarez is a recipient of the Attorney General’s Award for Excellence in Management (2023, 2019, 2002), the Attorney General’s Award for Excellence in Information Technology (2015), and the Inspector General’s Collaboration Award (Fiscal Year 2022).

Mr. Alvarez has a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Old Dominion University. He is also a graduate of the Federal Executive Institute (FEI) program, Leadership for a Democratic Society.
