United States Marshal

	Edward G. Kennedy (R) was appointed United States Marshal for the District of South Dakota on September 18, 1897 by President Grover Cleveland; January 10, 1898 by President William McKinley, and January 13, 1902 by President Theodore Roosevelt. Edward Kennedy was one of five children born to Samuel and Rebecca (Hayes) Kennedy in Hollidaysburg, Blair County, Pennsylvania on December 17th, 1844. In August 1862, at the age of 17, Edward enlisted in Company C, 139th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and received an honorable discharge in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, July 1865. He was an active participant in the battle of Antietam and in all the engagements in which the First Brigade of the Second Division, Sixth Army Corps, took part. In 1889 Edward located to the Territory of Dakota, Potter County, where he engaged in the cattle business in partnership with his brother, F. H. Kennedy. On December 15, 1891, Kennedy married Miss Mary B. Brundage of Bismarck, North Dakota and had two children, Ruth and Donald.

During Mr. Kennedy's career in South Dakota, he also served as state senator, businessman and banker. During the World war, he was a prime mover in the organization of the Red Cross and was one of its most active workers for several years. On January 20, 1933, Edward Kennedy, 88 years old, died leaving behind a widow, Louise D Kennedy and his two children from his previous marriage. His is interred at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls.
