The Civil Rights Division U.S. Department of Justice, is seeking an experienced attorney for the position of Deputy Chief of the Housing and Civil Enforcement Section in Washington, D.C.

The Housing Section enforces civil rights laws designed to protect persons from illegal discrimination in housing, lending, zoning and land use, and places of public accommodation. These laws include the Fair Housing Act, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, Titles II and III of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act and the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. In enforcing these laws, the Section conducts investigations, brings lawsuits and monitors compliance with court orders and settlements. The Section’s work involves private and public entities, including landlords, financial institutions, and local jurisdictions.

There are several Deputy Chief positions in the Section. Each Deputy Chief is responsible for supervising investigations, litigation and compliance monitoring under the statutes enforced by the Section. Each Deputy Chief also assists the Section Chief in developing enforcement policies, strategies, and priorities. In addition, each Deputy Chief has significant administrative and personnel responsibilities for assisting the Section Chief in directing the activities of a staff, including attorneys and support personnel.

Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar in good standing (any jurisdiction), and have a minimum of five years of post-J.D. legal experience. Applicants must have strong interpersonal, organizational, advocacy, writing and oral communication skills, as well as significant experience investigating, negotiating settlements and conducting litigation of federal court cases. In addition, applicants must have demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills.
