DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE AND A FORMER EMPLOYEE SETTLE

ALLEGATIONS OF CONFLICT OF INTEREST VIOLATIONS

A former Deputy Assistant Attorney General at the Justice Department today paid $30,000 in a civil settlement to resolve allegations that he violated conflict of interest laws for federal employees.

In April of 1999, Mark A. Boster, former Deputy Assistant Attorney General of the Information Resources Management Office, communicated with the Justice Department regarding assistance relating to his current employer, Science Applications International Corporation, of McLean, Virginia. Mr. Boster, who admits no wrongdoing, was employed with the Department of Justice from February of 1994 to January of 1999.

The government said that Boster's telephone call was a violation of Title 18, U.S. Code, Section 207 (c), a law prohibiting certain senior government officials from contacting the government on behalf of an employer within one year of leaving the federal government.

This matter was handled by the Criminal Division's Public Integrity Section. The investigation was conducted by the Office of Inspector General for the Department of Justice.
