The Department of Justice hosted four regional multi-agency Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect Prevention Conferences between July 1999 and February 2000. A central focus of the conferences was to create or enhance inter-governmental and multi-disciplinary State Working Groups to promote these efforts on an ongoing basis at the state and local level. Such efforts are underway in at least 30 states. State and local working groups are pursuing a broad variety of projects relating to enhanced enforcement, prevention, training, coordination, and public awareness. Working group members include federal, state and local law enforcement, regulators, licensors, surveyors, resident advocates, medical and emergency professionals, and others. Individuals from approximately 40 states as well as representatives of national organizations will attend the meeting.
