NEW YORK-NEW YORK HOTEL AND CASINO REACHES AGREEMENT WITH
JUSTICE DEPARTMENT REGARDING COMPLIANCE REVIEW OF
ACCESSIBILITY TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

WASHINGTON, D.C. - - New York-New York Hotel & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada, reached an agreement today with the Justice Department that ensures that its facilities will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The agreement resolves a compliance review conducted by the Justice Department of the New York-New York Hotel & Casino. The review began prior to the hotel's construction and took place over a period of more than two years. The review was a cooperative effort resulting in a hotel and casino that has accessible gaming tables and penthouse suites.

The agreement requires that New York-New York widen all of its bathroom doors in its 2,023 guest rooms and suites to allow access for people with disabilities, as required by the ADA's Accessibility Standards and the recent 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decision in the Long v. Coast Resorts that involved failures to ensure accessibility at the Orleans Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"I am pleased that the New York-New York Hotel & Casino, worked so closely with the Justice Department to make sure that its facilities fully comply with the ADA," said Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Ralph F. Boyd, Jr. "Their work to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities will serve as an industry model, and I recognize them for their commitment."

In addition to renovating its bathroom doorways, New York-New York has also taken the following steps to increase accessibility to its facilities including:

Title III of the ADA prohibits discrimination by public accommodations and commercial facilities against persons with disabilities. In particular, it requires that newly constructed facilities, like the New York-New York Hotel & Casino, to comply with the ADA Standards for Accessible Design.
