JUSTICE DEPARTMENT FILES DISCRIMINATION
LAWSUIT AGAINST CONCAN, TEXAS CAMPGROUND

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Justice Department today filed a lawsuit against the owners of Camp Riverview, a campground located in Concan, Texas. The lawsuit alleges that the campground owners engaged in a pattern or practice of discrimination against Hispanics based on their national origin and color.

The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court in San Antonio, Texas, alleges that the campground and its owners violated Title II of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. This section prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion and national origin in places of public accommodation.

The complaint specifically alleges, among other things, that Camp Riverview and its owners violated Title II by denying lodging to Hispanic individuals, harassing Hispanic campground guests, and evicting Hispanic guests from the campground.

"No one should be denied access to a campground open to the public because of their national origin or the color of their skin," said Ralph F. Boyd, Jr., Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights.

The Justice Department's lawsuit seeks a court order prohibiting the owners of Camp Riverview from engaging in discriminatory conduct and requires that the campground take steps to remedy past unlawful conduct.

Individuals who believe they have been victims of discrimination should call the Justice Department's Housing and Civil Enforcement Section at 800-896-7743. For more information about the Civil Rights Division, please visit the website at www.usdoj.gov/crt/housing.
