LORI SHARPE DAY TO STEP DOWN AS DIRECTOR
OF THE OFFICE OF INTERGOVERNMENTAL AND PUBLIC LIAISON

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Attorney General John Ashcroft today announced that Lori Sharpe Day, Director of the Office of Intergovernmental and Public Liaison and Advisor to the Attorney General, will step down at the end of this week. Day joined the Department in 2001 to serve as the Attorney General’s chief liaison with local and state governments, law enforcement, as well as other outside groups and organizations.

“Lori’s contribution to the Department of Justice has been enormous; she has been one of the Department's greatest champions. She has been our eyes and ears on the front lines with state and local governments and law enforcement professionals. At a time when communication and coordination are key elements to our success in the war on terrorism, Lori was instrumental in bringing communication and coordination to the Department's outreach effort to our state and local constituencies,” said Attorney General John Ashcroft. “Lori has been a trusted, long-time colleague over the past eight years, and she has served with excellence in every position of trust she has held. While I am sad to see her go, I wish her all the best in her future endeavors.”

Day will leave the Department to become the Vice President of Government Affairs for the Air Transport Association of America. Prior to her service with the Justice Department, she served as the Director of Congressional Affairs for the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association. From 1995-2000, Day worked for then-Senator Ashcroft where she held the position of Legislative Counsel, then Deputy Chief of Staff.

Jamie Brown has been named as the new Director following Day’s departure. Brown has served in the Office of Legislative Affairs at the Department of Justice since August 2002, where she has served as Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General and as Acting Assistant Attorney General. Previously, Jamie worked as a Senior Associate with Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Hand’s Federal Affairs and Legislative Practice Group, and as Legislative Counsel to U.S. Senator Connie Mack. Jamie is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center and the University of South Florida, Magna Cum Laude.

"Jamie's knowledge of the legislative process and her relationships on Capitol Hill have proven invaluable in the Department's relations with Congress. I am pleased that she will continue her outstanding service to America by serving as Director of the Office of Intergovernmental and Public Liaison. With her breadth of knowledge and experience she will work to continue the unprecedented cooperation we have built and the partnerships we continue to forge with our local and state law enforcement constituencies,” said Attorney General John Ashcroft.
