FORMER UNITED STATES POSTAL WORKER SENTENCED TO 2 YEARS IMPRISONMENT FOR STEALING OVER $400,000 IN MONEY ORDERS

OAKLAND – United States Attorney Scott N. Schools announced that today United States District Court Judge D. Lowell Jensen sentenced Manuel A. Moreno, 46, of Tracy, California, to serve 24 months imprisonment and pay restitution in the amount of $410,959.26 to the United States for stealing postal money orders in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 500. Moreno had previously pled guilty pursuant to a plea agreement, in which he admitted that between October 2003 and July 2005, he engaged in a scheme to steal money orders by falsely noting in the United States Postal system that customers had purchased them. On the day of his arrest, agents recovered more than $13,000 in cash and more than $15,000 in blank money orders from Moreno. According to statements made in court, Moreno used this money for personal expenses and gambling.

Shashi Kewalramani is the Assistant U.S. Attorney who is prosecuting the case with the assistance of Lead Legal Assistant Cynthia Daniel. The prosecution is the result of an investigation by the United States Postal Inspection Service, Office of the Inspector General.
