DOCTOR CHARGED WITH HEALTH CARE FRAUD

Kevin J. O’Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that TADEUSZ SKOWRON, age 54, of 47 Avonwood Road #103, Avon, Connecticut, has been indicted by a federal grand jury sitting in Hartford on one count of health care fraud. The Indictment was returned yesterday, June 7.

According to the Indictment, SKOWRON’s license to practice medicine was suspended by the State of Connecticut on May 18, 2004. The Indictment alleges that, after his license was suspended, SKOWRON continued to treat Medicare patients and to bill the Medicare program for his services. SKOWRON’s medical practice had offices in Bridgeport, and Old Greenwich, Connecticut.

The case has been assigned to United States District Judge Janet C. Hall in Bridgeport. SKOWRON is scheduled to be arraigned before Magistrate Judge Holly B. Fitzimmons on June 14, 2005, at which time a trial date will be set. If SKOWRON is convicted of this charge, he faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years and a fine of up to $250,000.

U.S. Attorney O’Connor stressed that an indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial at which it is the Government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

“This office prosecutes health care fraud cases that involve Medicare funds, but we also take seriously our obligation to ensure the safety of Medicare beneficiaries,” U.S. Attorney O’Connor stated.

This matter is being investigated by the Health Care Fraud Task Force, which is coordinated by the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and addresses abuses of the health care system in Connecticut. Members of the Task Force who investigated this case include special agents from HHS-OIG, the FBI, the Office of Inspector General of the Food and Drug Administration, and the U.S. Defense Criminal Investigative Service.

U.S. Attorney O’Connor stated that anyone with information concerning health care fraud is encouraged to contact the FBI Health Care Fraud hotline at (203) 785-9270.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Jonathan Biran and David J. Sheldon.
