Channing D. Phillips was named Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia on May 29, 2009.
Mr. Phillips joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Columbia in 1994, as a line Assistant, where he investigated and prosecuted a variety of criminal matters, including drug trafficking, illegal firearms, violent crime, immigration and fraud cases. Prior to being named Acting U.S. Attorney, Mr. Phillips served as Principal Assistant U.S. Attorney. He has previously served as Chief of Staff and Special Counsel to the United States Attorney. Prior to joining the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, Mr. Phillips was a trial attorney with the Organized Crime and Racketeering Section of the Criminal Division at the Department of Justice. He joined the Department of Justice after having served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Shellie F. Bowers, Associate Judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
Mr. Phillips is a native and resident of Washington, D.C. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1980, and from the Howard University School of Law in 1986.
