Verification Hearings

Once the approval process is completed, a transfer date is established and International Prisoner Transfer Unit (IPTU) coordinates the plans for the verification hearing required by 18 U.S.C. § 4107. A date for the verification hearing is set after consultations with the Bureau of Prisons and the Administrative Office of the United States Courts (which arranges for the attendance of a Magistrate Judge). IPTU also coordinates the presence at the verification hearings of Assistant United States Attorneys and arranges for public defender services for all prisoners so that they may have an explanation of the ramifications of transfer. Some time after the verification hearing has been held, the Bureau of Prisons arranges with foreign corrections officials to turn over the prisoner.
