Andy S. S. Yip, sentenced to 66 months in prison for subscribing to false tax returns and related tax offenses. Yip was also ordered to pay restitution to the Internal Revenue Service in the amount of $1,758,835 and prosecution costs of $22,522.

Ed Kubo, United States Attorney for Hawaii, announced that, Tenryoan, Inc., a vendor serving prepared food at Shirokiya Department Store at Ala Moana Shopping Center, pled guilty to hiring and employing aliens not authorized to work in the United States.

Ed Kubo, United States Attorney for Hawaii, announced today that, Larry Ordinado, Jr., of Honolulu, sentenced by United States District Judge J. Michael Seabright to 12 months and one day in prison for one count of distributing 0.114 grams of methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of Kalihi Uka elementary school which is within the Chinatown/Kalihi Weed and Seed site.

Ed Kubo, United States Attorney for Hawaii, announced today that Nathaniel Russell, (also known as "Bobo"), sentenced by U.S. District Judge J. Michael Seabright to 240 months (20 years) imprisonment.

Edward H. Kubo, Jr., United States Attorney for Hawaii, announced today that the U.S. Department of Justice, Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative has made approximately $89,000 available for worthy anti-gun or anti-gang programs in the state.

A federal grand jury indicted two former Hawaii residents, David Opollo Ross and Lei Lavarias Ross, also known as Lei L. Lavarias and Lei Lopez, who are currently residing in Nevada, on tax evasion and related tax offenses.

Oahu resident, Kawena Tavares, age 51, appeared yesterday before federal Magistrate Judge Barry M. Kurren for initial appearance and arraignment on an Indictment charging three counts of making false statements to obtain worker’s compensation benefits available under the Longshore & Harbor Worker’s Compensation Act (“LHWCA”), in violation of 33 U.S.C. § 931(a).

Patricia Pendleton, age 79, sentenced to 5 years probation and six months of home detention with electronic monitoring following her guilty plea to improperly receiving social security benefits from 2002 to 2006. Pendleton was also ordered to make restitution in the amount of approximately $46,000.

United States Attorney for the District Of Hawaii, Edward H. Kubo, Jr., and U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein for the District of Maryland, announced that Gregory D. Corbitt, age 39, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, pleaded guilty today to possession of child pornography to settle charges filed in the District of Hawaii. Corbitt lived in Hawaii, but moved to Maryland prior to his indictment, so the case was transferred to Maryland.

Rex T. Harrison, 36, of Waipahu, Hawaii, was convicted by a federal jury on November 29, 2007, of two counts of Assaulting a Federal Officer Terroristic Threatening of a Public Servant.

A former Hawaii resident, Marilyn P. DeMotta, 41, formerly of Ewa Beach but now living in Las Vegas, Nevada, was indicted by a federal grand jury on November 15, 2007, on charges of Bank Fraud, Theft of Public Funds, and Embezzlement by an employee of a federally insured bank.

Ai Hang Thi Hyde, also known as Kim Hyde, sentenced to 130 months in prison on drug trafficking and related money laundering charges. Hyde, an Australian citizen, was also ordered to forfeit $1,068,800 as proceeds of and property used to facilitate criminal activity.

Ed Kubo, the U.S. Attorney for Hawaii, and Jay Kimura, the County Prosecuting Attorney for the Big Island, jointly announced today that the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) has awarded the Big Island a $443,405 grant for the establishment of a Third Circuit Drug Court Team. The funding is provided under a 2007 COPS Methamphetamine Initiative.

Bronwyn Kugle, age 39, a former teacher, of Kailua, Hawaii, was sentenced to 37 months in prison for conspiring to distribute and possess, with intent to distribute 500 grams of cocaine and a quantity of MDMA (also known as "ecstacy"); possession with intent to distribute a quantity of MDMA; possession of a firearm and ammunition while being an unlawful user of controlled substances (cocaine and methamphetamine); and criminal forfeiture of her interest in her Kailua residence.

Walter Y. Arakaki, 68, entered a guilty plea today to one count of mail fraud, in a case that arose out of the investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Attorney General of the State of Hawaii into contracting fraud and public corruption at the Honolulu International Airport.

Four defendants were sentenced to terms of imprisonment for their participation in a bid rigging and kickback scheme from 1997 to 2002 which the court found resulted in overbillings of $4,508,731 to the State of Hawaii for repair and maintenance contracts at the Honolulu International Airport.

The United States Attorney’s Office for Hawaii announces that U.S. Attorney Ed Kubo, has been awarded the Honor Award for Public Service by the National Association of Chiefs of Police (NACOP).

Oahu resident Dr. Kachun Clement Yeung, sentenced to a year and a day in prison and a fine of $10,000 for dispensing oxycodone outside the course of professional medical practice and for no legitimate medical purpose.

A federal grand jury indicted Patricia Pendleton, aka Patricia Blackburn, Patricia Uehara; Christopher Brester; Roy Delorenia Daano, aka Rufino Daano; and Bon Von Jovi, aka Anthony Freel, Little Crowhorse O'bamsawin for defrauding the social security system and/or related offenses. U. S. Attorney Ed Kubo said that Jeffrey Keola was also charged by way of Information.

Bryson Apo, sentenced to a term of 18 months imprisonment. Apo, who had pleaded guilty, was sentenced for conspiring with his co-defendants to obstruct law enforcement by providing law enforcement information he obtained as a result of his former position as a Honolulu Police Department Officer, to co-defendants who operated a cockfighting operation in Waialua, Hawaii.

Former federal corrections officer, Akoni Sandoval Kapihe, a resident of Honolulu, was sentenced yesterday to a term of 33 months imprisonment. KAPIHE was sentenced for providing prohibited objects to inmates at the Federal Detention Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, while he was employed there as a corrections officer.
