Weed and Seed
Operation Weed and Seed is a strategy to prevent, control, and reduce violent crime, drug abuse, and gang activity in designated crime-troubled neighborhoods across the country. The strategy involves a two-pronged approach: law enforcement agencies and prosecutors "weed" out criminals, attempting to prevent their return to the targeted area; and human service agencies and community groups "seed" the area to provide prevention, intervention, treatment, and neighborhood revitalization. A community-oriented policing component bridges the weed and seed strategies. Benefits of Official Recognition include preference in receiving discretionary resources from participating federal agencies; priority for participating in federally-sponsored training and technical assistance; and eligibility to apply for Department of Justice Weed and Seed funds.
The Central Cedar
Rapids Weed and Seed site
encompasses the Mound View, Wellington Heights,
Oakhill Jackson, Taylor Area, and Northwest Area neighborhoods that surround
downtown Cedar Rapids. These are the areas in the city with the highest concentrations
of crime and human services needs. The Neighborhood Associations in each of
those areas are instrumental in making Weed and Seed work, and other partners
include the City of Cedar Rapids, Partnership for Safe Families, United Way
of East Central Iowa, Foundation 2, the Cedar Rapids Schools, Juvenile Court
Services, the Linn County Attorney's Office, the Cedar Rapids Police Department,
DEA, ATF, the United States Attorney's Office, and the Sixth Judicial District
Department of Correctional Services. A Correctional Services employee is the
Weed and Seed site administrator.
