Leon Man Sentenced On Gun Charge

DES MOINES, IA - On March 14, 2008, Paul R. Weigel, Jr., age 37, of Leon, Iowa, was sentenced to a term of 46 months imprisonment for being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced United States Attorney Matthew G. Whitaker. Senior United States District Judge Ronald E. Longstaff also ordered Weigel to serve a three year term of supervised release, and imposed an assessment of $100 to the Crime Victim Fund.


On December 7, 2007, Weigel entered a plea of guilty to the felon in possession of a firearm charge. At the time of his plea, Weigel stipulated that on January 6, 2007 he possessed a .17 caliber rifle after previously being convicted of a felony offense.


This case was prosecuted by the United States Attorneys Office for the Southern District of Iowa. This case was investigated by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
