DR. STEPHEN SCHNEIDER SHOULD BE RELEASED PENDING TRIAL, FEDERAL MAGISTRATE JUDGE’S ORDER SAYS
WICHITA,KAN. – Stephen Schneider, a physician from Haysville, Kan., should be released while he awaits trial on federal charges, a magistrate judge said in a ruling Monday.
U.S. Magistrate Donald W. Bostwick ruled in favor of Schneider’s motion for pre-trial release and set a hearing for 2 p.m. April 24, after which Schneider could be released. Bostwick gave prosecutors until the end of business Wednesday to respond his order.
Schneider’s wife, Linda, will remain in federal custody pending the completion of a psychological examination the court already had ordered.
Bostwick said Schneider should be released on a $325,000 unsecured bond with conditions, including the following:
– Electronic monitoring and home detention except for approved activities including church, medical treatment and attorney visits.
– No travel outside Sedgwick County without approval of a pretrial services officer.
– No contact with victims or their families.
– No practice of medicine.
Schneider was indicted in December 2007 on charges of conspiracy, unlawful distribution of controlled substances, health care fraud, illegal monetary transactions and money laundering.
As in any criminal case, a person is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. The indictment filed merely contains allegations of criminal conduct.
