TWO INDICTED ON INTERSTATE PROSTITUTION CHARGES
WICHITA, KAN. – Marteaus Carter, 28, Wichita, and Leslie Dimit, 22, Valley Center, Kan., were indicted Wednesday on federal charges of interstate travel in furtherance of prostitution.
According to the indictment, the crimes occurred as early as April 27, 2007, and continuing through July 22, 2008, in Kansas.
Both Carter and Dimit are charged with three counts:
– Transporting an individual in interstate commerce with intent that the person engage in prostitution. Upon conviction, the crime carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000.
– Enticing a person to travel in interstate commerce to engage in prostitution. Upon conviction, the crime carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000.
– Unlawful use of a telephone in furtherance of prostitution. Upon conviction, the crime carries a maximum penalty of 5 years and a fine up to $250,000.
Carter currently is in federal custody on another case in which he is charged with racketeering as one of the leaders of the Crips street gang in Wichita.
The Wichita Police Department and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office investigated. As in any criminal case, a person is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. The indictment filed merely contains allegations of criminal conduct.
