SALINA MAN SENTENCED IN THEFT OF FIREARMS

TOPEKA, KAN. – Robert Brenton Born, 19, Salina, was sentenced Monday to 30 months in federal prison for stealing 33 rifles and handguns from a sporting goods store in Salina.

“He also is ordered to pay $8,705 in restitution,” said U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren.

Born pleaded guilty in February to one count of the theft of firearms. In his plea, he admitted that on May 31, 2007, he and co-defendants Jamie Neil Durham and Charles Richard Ferris, Jr., burglarized Cleve’s Marine and Sporting Goods, 136 S. Broadway in Salina. They took the firearms to co-defendant Charles Richard Ferris, Sr., who agreed to hide some of the firearms in his residence.

Charles Richard Ferris, Sr., pleaded guilty in April to one count of receiving and possessing stolen firearms. He is set for sentencing July 28, 2008. Co-defendant Jamie Neil Durham pleaded guilty in November to the theft and was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison. Co-defendant Richard Ferris, Jr., pleaded guilty in March to the theft and is set for sentencing June 9, 2008.

U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Hough for their work on the case.
