The United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Kentucky has 85 employees when fully staffed. Many are career federal employees and have worked in this District for 20 plus years. Employees work in one of three locations-our headquarters office in Lexington, also known as Horse Capital of the World, or one of two staffed branch offices in Covington or London. Positions include Assistant United States Attorneys, Paralegal Specialists, Legal Assistants, a variety of Administrative positions, and student positions, both law and non-law.

Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA)
The attorney hiring process is conducted by members of the attorney supervisory staff, select AUSAs, and the United States Attorney. AUSA applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, have at least one year of post-JD experience and be an active member of at least one bar (any jurisdition.) Announcements will specify any preferred qualifications.

The Support Team consists of a variety of positions including Paralegal Specialist and Legal Assistant (OA). There is also small number of miscellaneous administrative, technical or professional positions. Applicants for a support staff position are only accepted during the time a vacancy announcement is open. Vacant positions are posted on this site, as well as Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) website, www.usajobs.opm.gov.

Student positions are filled based on available funding and allocated positions. Current student positions are those recruited under the Student Temporary Employment Program (also known as STEP). This program offers temporary clerical and administrative opportunities to students who are enrolled at least half-time in an accredited college or university, graduate or professional, vocational or technical school. Students in these positions may work up to 20 hours per week and as many as 40 hours per week during school breaks. Vacancy announcements for student positions are emailed to the local colleges and universities as well as posted on our District website.
This office has coordinated with the University of Kentucky College of Law to allow two law students each semester to provide 100 hours of volunteer service. This is offered as a class at the University of Kentucky for which students must enroll through the law school. The volunteer service consists primarily of providing research and writing assistance in the Appellate Division of this office. Upon enrollment in the class, students are required to sign an agreement and have a background investigation prior to beginning the volunteer service. Consideration will also be given on a case-by-case basis to law students from other schools who would like to volunteer.
