LOUISVILLE FELON SENTENCED TO FOUR YEARS AND NINE MONTHS FOR POSSESSION OF A STOLEN .44 CALIBER MAGNUM
– Previously convicted of assault

LOUISVILLE, KY - Phillip Dunn, Jr., age 24, of Louisville, Kentucky, in Jefferson County, was sentenced to 4 years and 9 months imprisonment in United States District Court, Louisville, Kentucky, for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, U.S. Attorney David L. Huber of the Western District of Kentucky , and Paul Vido, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Louisville Field Division, jointly announced today.

Honorable Thomas B. Russell , United States District Judge, also sentenced Dunn to 3 years supervised release following incarceration. There is no parole in the federal judicial system.

Dunn was sentenced pursuant to his plea agreement in which he admitted that on February 8, 2007, when stopped by Louisville Metro Police, that he was in possession of a Ruger, .44 magnum caliber revolver, model Super Blackhawk, serial number 81-99702, which he knew to be stolen. Dunn acknowledged that at the time he was a convicted felon, who had previously been convicted, under Jefferson County, state Indictment 05CR3587, of one count of Assault II Under Extreme Emotional Disturbance, and one count of Wanton Endangerment I,

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mac Shannon. The Louisville Field Office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) conducted the investigation in partnership with the Louisville Metro Police Department, as part of ATF’s mandated mission to reduce violent crime and other threats to public safety.

This is a Project Backfire prosecution. Project Backfire is a cooperative effort by the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office, the Jefferson County Commonwealth’s Attorneys Office, the Louisville Metro Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the United States Attorney’s Office to ensure that firearm offenses are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the state and federal law.
