CONVICTED ARMED ROBBER INDICTED BY GRAND JURY ON FEDERAL GUN CHARGE

August 3, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SHAUN L. BAILEY, 34, of New Orleans, Louisiana, was charged by a Federal Grand Jury in a single count indictment for being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

According to court documents, on July 25, 2007, NOPD Officers encountered BAILEY who fit the description of a possible trespasser in the 8000 block of Green Street. According the complaint, as officers attempted to detain BAILEY, he resisted arrest and dropped a loaded revolver during the struggle.

Also according to court record, law enforcement later determined that BAILEY has previous felony convictions in Orleans Parish Criminal District Court in February, 1993 for armed robbery, and in December, 2002, for possession of a firearm with narcotics, possession of heroin, and possession of a Schedule 3 narcotic.

If convicted, BAILEY faces a maximum term of imprisonment of ten (10) years, a fine of $250,000.00 and three (3) years of supervised release.

U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case was investigated by the New Orleans Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives as part of the Department of Justice’s Violent Crime Task Force. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Richard W. Rose.
