BOGALUSA WOMAN INDICTED FOR DEFRAUDING AMERICAN RED CROSS
August 9, 2007
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MAJORIE JORDAN, age 35, a resident of Bogalusa, LA, was charged in a four count indictment with mail fraud in relation to a series of financial assistance she submitted to the American Red Cross between September 22, 2005 and November 9, 2005, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.
According to court documents, the American Red Cross made disaster assistance money of up to $1,565 available to those affected by the hurricanes of 2005 on a one-time only basis. The indictment alleges that MAJORIE JORDAN repeatedly applied for these funds at various Red Cross facilities throughout the early fall of 2005, each time indicating that she had not yet received any money at all from the Red Cross, and received the funds eighteen (18) times during a two month period.
If convicted, MAJORIE JORDAN faces a maximum term of imprisonment of twenty (20) years and is subject to a fine of up to $250,000.
U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Dan Friel.
