LAPLACE RESIDENT PLEADS GUILTY TO THEFT OF BANK FUNDS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MICHELE STUART, age 41, a resident of LaPlace, Louisiana, pled guilty in federal court today to a felony charge of theft of bank funds, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.
STUART entered a plea of guilty before U. S. District Court Judge Martin L.C. Feldman to a one-count of a Bill of Information charging her with theft of bank funds, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2113(b). This count carries with it statutory maximum term of imprisonment for 10 years and/or a $250,000 fine, not more than three years supervised release and a $100 special assessment fee. Sentencing is scheduled for March 13, 2008 at 10:30 a.m.
STUART was employed by Hibernia National Bank, now Capital One, as a bank teller at the Belle Terre, LaPlace Branch from approximately June 2004, until approximately March 29, 2005. During the course of an internal investigation within Hibernia National Bank, STUART, admitted to stealing approximately $24,000 from her teller drawer and taking money from the electronic dispenser machine and customer's cash deposits. An internal audit revealed a loss of $24, 250.56 from STUART’S teller drawer. After admitting to her crime, STUART made full restitution to the bank.
The case was investigated by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Julia K. Evans.
