KENNER MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO FEDERAL FIREARMS CHARGES

LANCE EVERSON, 29, of Kenner, Louisiana pled guilty today before U. S. District Judge Sarah S. Vance to a two-count indictment for being a felon in possession of a firearm and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

EVERSON faces a maximum ten (10) years imprisonment on Count 1 and five (5) years imprisonment on Count 2. He is scheduled to be sentenced on February 20, 2008 at 9:30 A.M.

According to the factual basis, on October 5, 2006, New Orleans Police Department officers observed the defendant EVERSON in a brown four door sedan run a red light in the vicinity of Jackson Avenue and Magnolia Street. The officers stopped the vehicle and as they approached, they observed EVERSON and two female passengers, and smelled burning marijuana. When the officers reached the vehicle, the defendant a sped away. Officers gave chase and during the chase, they observed the defendant throw something out of the driver’s window. After a lengthy chase, the defendant was arrested and police seized approximately 5 grams of marijuana from the defendant’s pocket. The arresting officers returned to the vicinity of the 2700 block of Philip Street and they seized a .25 caliber pistol with an obliterated serial number. The weapon was loaded with seven live rounds. EVERSON has previous convictions for possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of cocaine.

This case was investigated by the New Orleans Police Department with the assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. This prosecution is being handled by Assistant U. S. Attorneys Richard W. Rose and Elizabeth Privitera as part of Project Safe Neighborhood.
