NEW ORLEANS MAN SENTENCED TO 71 MONTHS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR GUN VIOLATIONS

November 28, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LONNY REAUX, age 25, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana was sentenced by U. S. District Judge Carl J. Barbier to seventy-one (71) months imprisonment per count for two counts of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, announced U. S Attorney Jim Letten. The terms of imprisonment will run concurrently. In addition to the term of prison term, Judge Barbier imposed three (3) years of supervised release per count following the term of confinement. During the supervised release, the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of confinement should he violate any terms of his supervised release.

According to the court record, on May 23, 2006, members of the New Orleans Police Department while on patrol at the Woodland Apartment Complex, arrested REAUX when they encountered him coming down the stairwell with a 12 gauge shotgun and a Lorcin semi-automatic pistol. Subsequently on October 17, 2006, the New Orleans Police Department had secured an arrest warrant against REAUX and proceeded to go to the Woodland Apartment Complex to execute the arrest. While executing the arrest warrant, it was discovered that REAUX had in his possession a Yugoslavian made AK-47. REAUX has an extensive arrest record for narcotics and violent crimes and has several prior felony convictions including an April 26, 2000 conviction in Orleans Parish for Simple Robbery. Based on this conviction, REAUX was prohibited by Federal Law from possessing a firearm.

The Court imposed a sentence within the recommended guidelines range. After sentencing, REAUX was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal’s Service to begin his term of imprisonment.

This case was investigated by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation along with the officers of the New Orleans Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Juan M. Masini.
