NEW ORLEANS MAN SENTENCED TO 2 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR GUN VIOLATIONS

December 5, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ANTHONY WILLIAMS, age 23, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana was sentenced by U. S. District Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle to two (2) years (24 months) imprisonment for possessing a firearm and possessing ammunition as a convicted felon, announced U. S Attorney Jim Letten. In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Lemelle imposed three (3) years of supervised release following the term of imprisonment. During the period of supervised release, the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should he violate any terms of his supervised release.

According to court documents, on September 16, 2006, WILLIAMS was arrested by New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) officers for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The arrest occurred after NOPD officers stopped the vehicle WILLIAMS was driving for a traffic violation on Royal Street in the French Quarter. Upon approaching the vehicle the NOPD officers observed in the vehicle a Mossberg model 500C 20 gauge shotgun and several shotgun shells. Subsequent investigation revealed that WILLIAMS had previously been convicted in St. Tammany Parish for a felony, specifically Simple Burglary of an Automobile. The case was adopted federally and WILLIAMS was indicted by a Federal Grand Jury in March, 2007.

The Court imposed a sentence within the recommended guidelines range. After sentencing, WILLIAMS was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal’s Service to begin his term of imprisonment.

This case was investigated by Special Agents of the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives along with officers of the New Orleans Police Department. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Juan M. Masini.
