NEW ORLEANS MAN SENTENCED TO 57 MONTHS IN FEDERAL PRISON
December 12, 2007
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
KIM C. THOMPSON, age 26, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was sentenced by U. S. District Court Judge Mary Ann Vial Lemmon to fifty-seven (57) months imprisonment for being a Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm and Possession with Intent to Distribute less than one-hundred (100) grams of heroin, announced U.S. Attorney Jim Letten. In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Lemmon imposed three (3) years of supervised release following the term of imprisonment. During the term of supervised release, the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should he violate any terms of his supervised release.
On September 13, 2007, THOMPSON pled guilty to both counts of the federal indictment. According to court documents, on January 5, 2007, the New Orleans Police Department received an anonymous tip about illegal narcotics trafficking activities being conducted from 2211 and 2213 Magnolia Street. NOPD established surveillance in the area and observed THOMPSON as he engaged in drug trafficking activities. Also, NOPD observed as THOMPSON kept a firearm within arms reach as he sold illegal narcotics. NOPD arrested THOMPSON and during the course of the arrest, officers determined that THOMPSON possessed a Masterpiece Arms model MPA971, 9 mm semi-automatic rifle, serial number F1180 and a quantity of heroin, a Schedule I drug controlled substance.
Further investigation determined that THOMPSON was convicted of manslaughter on June 28, 2000 in Orleans Parish Criminal District Court. After sentencing, THOMPSON was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal’s service to begin his term of imprisonment.
This case was investigated by the New Orleans Police Department with the assistance of Special Agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The matter was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sandford C. Coats.
