NEW ORLEANS MAN SENTENCED TO OVER 23 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR DRUG AND GUN VIOLATIONS

SHANNON MITCHELL, age 37, a resident of Gretna, Louisiana was sentenced by U. S. District Judge Eldon E. Fallon to over twenty three (23) years (280 months) imprisonment for possessing with the intent to distribute 50 grams or more of cocaine base and a concurrent sentence of ten years (10) imprisonment for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, announced U. S Attorney Jim Letten. In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Fallon imposed ten (10) years of supervised release when the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should he violate any terms of his supervised release.
According to the court documents, MITCHELL previously pled guilty on September 12, 2007. In connection with the plea, MITCHELL admitted that on October 25, 2006, federal and state law enforcement executed a search warrant at MITCHELL’S residence and found approximately 210 grams of cocaine base, 130 grams of cocaine hydrochloride and a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol. MITCHELL had previously been convicted of possession with the intent to distribute cocaine base in the District Court of Orleans Parish, Louisiana on February 8, 1991. After sentencing, MITCHELL was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal’s Service to begin his term of imprisonment.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the New Orleans Police Department, and the Gretna Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Samuel D. Marsh.
