NEW ORLEANS MAN SENTENCED TO 60 MONTHS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR NARCOTICS VIOLATION

April 4, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LIONEL JACKSON, JR., age 39, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was sentenced yesterday by U. S. District Judge Lance M. Africk to 60 months imprisonment for possession with the intent to distribute five grams or more of crack cocaine, announced U. S Attorney Jim Letten.

Judge Africk also imposed five (5) years of supervised release following the term of imprisonment, during which time, the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should he violate any terms of his supervised release. In addition to the 60 month sentence imposed by Judge Africk, the defendant must also serve an additional 18 months imprisonment, to be run consecutive to the 60 months sentence, ordered by Judge Carl J. Barbier for having violated conditions of his supervised release from a 1998 federal drug conviction.

On November 30, 2007, LIONEL JACKSON, JR. previously entered a guilty plea before Judge Africk admitting that on May 22, 2007, he did knowingly and intentionally possess with the intent to distribute five grams or more of cocaine base in the parking lot of the Pelican Motel at 17 Westbank Expressway in Gretna, Louisiana. In addition to the 10.1 net grams of crack recovered by narcotics detectives from the Gretna Police Department, JACKSON was also found to be in possession of $1,996.00.

In imposing the 60 month sentence, the Court imposed a sentence three months greater than the recommended guidelines range. After sentencing, JACKSON was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal’s Service to begin his term of imprisonment.

This case was investigated by Special Agents of the Drug Enforcement Agency along with narcotics detectives from the Gretna Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Rick Veters.
