Divisions and Branch Offices
As part of the Department of Justice, the United States Attorney's Office has jurisdiction and responsibility in a broad range of areas, all of which involve representing the legal interests of the Federal government before the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Michigan. The district consists of 34 counties in the eastern half of Michigan's lower peninsula, which include over two-thirds of the state's population. Along with Federal law enforcement agencies, the office participates in criminal investigations, usually in connection with a grand jury. The office also represents the government in civil suits filed against Federal agencies and employees and in affirmative civil actions to force compliance with Federal law. Assistant U.S. Attorneys in the office also handle all appeals in their cases in the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The office is composed of approximately 100 attorneys and an equal number of support staff employees, making it among the largest U.S. Attorney's Offices in the country. The majority of the attorney positions are assigned to the Detroit duty station (currently 65 in the Criminal Division, 20 in the Civil Division, and four in the Appellate Division). Additionally, branch offices in Flint and Bay City are staffed with attorneys and support staff employees.
The U.S. Attorney's Office is made up of four primary divisions and two branch offices. Select any of the following for more information:
