GRAND RAPIDS MAN RECEIVES HARD TIME FOR FEDERAL GUN CHARGE
TUESDAY, APRIL 15, 2008 -
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Dwight Lee Mapp, age 34, of Grand Rapids, was sentenced
to eight years in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a felon, U.S. Attorney Charles R. Gross
announced today. Mapp pled guilty on January 4, 2008, to possessing an SKS semiautomatic
rifle that law enforcement officers found during the execution of a search warrant at his home last
year. Mapp’s criminal record includes four prior felony drug convictions. In addition to eight
years in prison, Chief Judge Robert Holmes Bell, of U. S. District Court, ordered Mapp to serve
two years of supervised release.
U.S. Attorney Gross commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives
and the Grand Rapids Police Department for their work on the case. U.S. Attorney Gross noted
that “ the citizens of Grand Rapids should understand that, as part of our Project Safe
Neighborhoods initiative, we remain fully committed to vigorously enforcing federal law against
convicted felons possessing firearms.” The case was prosecuted on behalf of the United States by
