May 8, 2008 SOUTH COUNTY WOMAN INDICTED FOR EMBEZZLEMENT St. Louis, MO: Geraldine Sanders was indicted on fraud charges involving the embezzlement of $200,000 from her former employer, United States Attorney Catherine L. Hanaway and Sunset Hills Police Chief William LaGrand announced today. “This case is a good example of a local police department working quickly and professionally to investigate a case in an attempt to serve a local business devastated by an alleged corrupt employee,” said Hanaway. “I applaud the work of the Sunset Hills Police Department and am hopeful a satisfactory resolution of this case, including full restitution to the victim business, will be forthcoming.” Sanders is alleged to have embezzled more than $200,000 from her ex-employer between 2005 and early this year. The indictment states that Sanders took company checks intended to pay vendors and made them out to herself. Because Sanders was the office manager and bookkeeper for the business, she was able to hide the unauthorized checks until outside accountants and auditors discovered the large discrepancy caused by Sanders’ conduct. GERALDINE SANDERS, South St. Louis County, was indicted by a federal grand jury on one felony count of mail fraud. If convicted, Sanders faces a term of imprisonment of up to 20 years and/or a fine up to $250,000, along with mandatory restitution to her ex-employer. The charges set forth in an indictment are merely accusations, and each defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. |
