Weed & Seed - Southeast Missouri
Southeast Missouri Weed and Seed, Inc. is a non-profit organization made up of five Missouri cities: Cape Girardeau, Poplar Bluff, Caruthersville, Charleston and Sikeston. Each city has a steering committee made up of business owners, U.S. Attorney representatives, educators, city government officials and nonprofit organizations. Each city has at least three representatives on the regional board of directors, which is the governing body of the organization. These representatives are the steering chair, a target area resident and a designated person from the board who also may be from the target neighborhood. In addition to the three local steering committee representatives, the regional board also comprises a city official, such as the chief of police, city manager or mayor, and a representative from Southeast Missouri State University. Southeast Missouri Weed and Seed Inc. links the resources of all five sites in order to accomplish its goals and objectives. All sites are expected to commit to the overall Weed and Seed strategy as well as the local strategy. The Prevention, Intervention and Treatment, Law Enforcement, Community Policing, Neighborhood Restoration, Safe Havens and Community Development Corporation linkages will make Southeast Missouri Weed and Seed a strong, economically viable organization. It also will create communities where all people feel safe; everyone has job opportunities; a higher number of residents own homes; and children develop confidence by completing school and obtaining responsibilities in the community. Southeast Missouri Weed and Seed has partnered with the Workforce Investment Board to create a work-mentoring program for court involved at-risk youth, known as the Heartland Dream Team. Thirty-five youth and ten mentors from the targeted areas are taken on a week-long field trip to Washington, D.C. and Lincoln University Extension. While there a variety of programs and services are offered. Southeast Missouri Weed and Seed also partners with SEMO Drug Task Force, Bootheel Drug Task Force and the Missouri Highway patrol on law enforcement initiatives. There are fifteen Weed and Seed Safe Havens implementing various youth and elderly programs. These programs include job skills, job readiness, computer, home ownership and basic life skills classes. These Safe Havens leverage their funding through other sources and are located within or near the target communities. Each city has a site coordinator who oversees the organization's day-to-day functions. A Weeding Coordinator coordinates activities such as Operation Off Streets (an anti-gang and drug initiative), COPS activities, and the DEFY (Drug Education for Youth), GREAT (Gang Resistance Education and Training) and DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) programs. An Executive Director oversees the functions of the organization, supervises the site coordinators, submits required reports to the Justice Department and coordinates all other Weeding and Seeding components of the organization. |
