LAWYER SENTENCED TO PRISON IN TAX EVASION CASE

DUNN LAMPTON, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi, and RODNEY CLARKE, Special Agent In Charge of the Internal Revenue Service—Criminal Investigation, New Orleans Field Office, announced that JACK R. DURLAND, JR., formerly of Gulfport, Mississippi, was sentenced to prison today for evasion of his federal income taxes.
DURLAND was sentenced to 11 months of imprisonment, to be followed by three years of supervised release. DURLAND also was ordered to pay $97,475.00 in restitution to the IRS and a $30,000.00 fine. DURLAND also was required to pay a mandatory $100.00 special assessment
In sentencing DURLAND, the court found that the criminal tax loss for the two-year period charged in the indictment was $115,447.00 for the years 1999 and 2000. Because DURLAND pleaded guilty to the 2000 year, he was ordered to pay $97,475.00 in restitution.
DURLAND was sentenced before the Honorable Louis Guirola, Jr., United States District Judge, in Gulfport, Mississippi, where DURLAND lived during the time period of the conduct charged. DURLAND pleaded guilty to the tax charge in April.
During the period alleged in the indictment, defendant DURLAND served as Vice President of Gulfport Oil & Gas and as Vice President of T.J. Oil & Gas, Inc. For the 1999 tax year, DURLAND failed to report $55,000 in salary payments from T.J. Oil.
For the 2000 tax year, DURLAND failed to report $5,000 in salary payments he received from T.J. Oil. Also for the 2000 tax year, DURLAND failed to report wages of $122,500 he received from Gulfport Oil & Gas. DURLAND also failed to report oil revenue of $359,575.55 from Eagle Energy Development Co. that was payable to Gulfport Oil & Gas and Gulfport Ventures.
