BUSINESSMAN ADMITS GUILT IN TAX EVASION CASE

November 7, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DUNN LAMPTON, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi, and GEORGIA T. TAYLOR, Acting Special Agent In Charge of the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation, New Orleans Field Office, announced that CHARLES D. CHAMBERS of Gulfport, Mississippi, pleaded guilty today to evasion of his federal income taxes. CHAMBERS entered his plea before the Honorable Louis Guirola, Jr., United States District Judge, in Gulfport.
During the period alleged in the felony information, defendant CHAMBERS served as president of Chucks Carpets Inc. of Long Beach, Mississippi. The information charged CHAMBERS
with tax evasion in connection with his personal federal income tax returns for the years 2000 through 2002 and with tax evasion in connection with the federal income tax returns filed by Chucks Carpets Inc. for the same years.
As described by the prosecutor in court today, CHAMBERS maintained a separate set of invoices on which he recorded sales that he did not reflect on the books of Chucks Carpets Inc. By using a double set of books, CHAMBERS was able to evade the assessment of federal income taxes on his business and personal returns. CHAMBERS pleaded guilty to evading federal income taxes owed by Chucks Carpets Inc.
CHAMBERS faces a maximum of five years of imprisonment, to be followed by three years of supervised release. He also faces up to $250,000 fine and a $100 special assessment.
Assistant United States Attorney GAINES CLEVELAND is the prosecutor in charge of the case. Mr. LAMPTON praised the efforts of the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation for their diligent work in the investigation of this case.
