FINANCIAL LITIGATION REPORT
United States Attorney Bill Mercer announced today that the Financial Litigation Unit of the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Montana collected $8,383,043.49 during the fiscal year ending September 30, 2007.
The District of Montana collected $7,088,301.06 from civil litigation. These collections include environmental penalties, federal agency program fraud, mortgage foreclosures and student loans. The majority of the money received from civil litigation was in mortgage foreclosure cases.
The District of Montana collected $1,294,742.43 from criminal cases. These collections include fines, assessments, and restitution. The criminal fines and assessments collected are deposited in the Crime Victims Fund to aid victims of crime nationwide. Restitution is disbursed to the victims of crime.
The United States Attorney's Office in Montana operates on a budget of $4.3 million. The Financial Litigation Unit consists of one Assistant United States Attorney and two paralegal specialists. The United States Attorney's Office will continue aggressive collection efforts in its financial litigation caseload, which includes over 1,300 active cases.
