New York Men Indicted for Conspiracy to Rob Armored Trucks
NEWARK - Two New York residents were indicted today by a federal grand jury for conspiring to rob armored trucks in Jersey City, U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie announced.
The Indictment charges that Louis Hyman, 41, of Brooklyn, and Sebastian Williams, 34, of Queens, twice conspired among themselves and with others to rob armored trucks operated by Coin Depot Corporation. According to the indictment, the first conspiracy involved the March 23, 2002, armored robbery of an armored truck at a hardware store in Jersey City, in which more than $600,000 was stolen. Also according to the indictment, the second conspiracy involved the August 29, 2002, attempted armored robbery of an armored truck at the Newport Mall in Jersey City.
In the Newport Mall attempted robbery, a co-conspirator of Hyman and Williams - Kevin Henry, 48, of New York, was shot and wounded by one of the armored car guards. Henry was charged in a criminal complaint, along with another co-conspirator, Dwayne Jones, 34, of Jersey City, following their arrests immediately after the holdup attempt.
Hyman was arrested at his home in Queens early on the morning of on Sept. 11. Williams was arrested early on Sept. 19 at his home in Brooklyn. All four defendants have been in custody since their arrests
The three-count Indictment charges both Hyman and Williams with two counts of conspiracy. The indictment also charges both Hyman and Williams with one count of using and carrying a firearm during and in relation to the earlier conspiracy.
The conspiracy charges carry a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 or twice the value of the property stolen, whichever is greater, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Eli J. Richardson, who represents the Government. The firearm charges carry a sentence of at least five years.
Christie credited Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Louie F. Allen, with developing the case against Hyman and Williams.
